Best ice cream and soda fountain in Iowa! Great cheap food with fun 1950s old school vibe. Grilled pbj is awesome and now I do them at home. Make sure you order a chocolate shake as their ice cream is all home made. My wife gets the Reuben and malt and loves it.

Classic Pharmacy in Des Moines! Anyplace where Milkshakes have just as much healing power as Medicine does are cool with me! That's the kinda Pharmacy I can get behind! Fountain sodas, and award winning Ice Cream since 1916! Feel like stepping into yesteryear stop by here!

Very good hand crafted ice cream with unique flavors. Love the old style decor and the novelty that is an actual pharmacy. Ice cream is why you come here, they will make you basically anything you want. I saw lots of regulars asking for special orders that weren't on the menu. The kids love the place, they like it better than Snookie's malt shop. We will be back many times over.

I've been going to Bauders since the mid 80's when my college friends + I would go eat + then charge our meals to parents' and grandparents' accounts - as broke college kids do. Am pretty certain the charge accounts are long gone, but very little else has changed. We eat there 2-3 times/mo. - the world's best malts, unbelievable peppermint ice cream, great little sandwiches. The kiddo and I eat a sandwich and malt each for about $12! Seriously. They have breakfast sandwiches, too, but don't open early enough to catch the neighborhood school kids, so we haven't been yet. We support and encourage everyone in DSM to support this awesome gem. Des Moines wouldn't be as awesome without it.

Bauder Pharmacy is not like an old-fashioned drug store: it IS and old-fashoned drug store. It has the great hex-tile flooring, vintage Coke dispenser, salted nut case, stacked dessert display (loaded with Moon Pies today) mounted to the countertop , and apothecary in the back and wholesome, friendly customer service at every turn. The quaintness is comforting, and paired with a tuna melt from the counter, I usually feel better even before I get my medication. But the real strength of Bauders lies in the contemporary, solid professionalism of its pharmacists. The overall effect, which is entirely warranted, is neighborly trust.

During our recent trip to Iowa, we were lucky enough to get a Bauder's Ice Cream Twofer. First, Bauder's has been at the Iowa State Fair since 1986 and Gayle and I made sure that our day there wasn't complete until we each devoured one of their Peppermint Bars. This treat has an Oreo crust, 2 inches of ice cream, topped by hot fudge, and is eaten like a large ice cream sandwich. Of course it's "bad" Fair food! And your point? Finally, our last stop until we reached the airport (and home) was at the Bauder Pharmacy for a family's worth if ice cream cones. And as such, here's wishing you and yours a good and sweet year.

I'm quite certain I am the New York Time's wet dream when it comes to their travel section articles. What's that you say? Visit this hidden dive bar in the Nevada dessert that you have to crawl across cacti barefooted and sell your left nut to enter? Oh, yes, of course, anything you say NYTimes. I'm there. Let's do this. From a living history park in Lund, Sweden to daydreaming about trips-to-be, I'm a big fan of the 36 Hours in (name the city) series. Thanks to their Des Moines article, I have enjoyed art by Renoir, gathered produce at the famour Des Moines Farmers Market, drooled over the ornate Law Library in the Statehouse, devoured crazy-delicious pastries at La Mie and shopped my way around the vintage shops in East Village. And now, now, I have conquered the award-winning ice cream and egg salad found at Bauder Pharmacy on Ingersoll in Des Moines! This old-timey and probably often overlooked pharmacy is like stepping back in time to a place where lunch is easily $5 tops and all of the food is prepared just a few inches in front of your face. A place in which the ice cream is piled high, the people are friendly and you can't help but adore the outdated interior decor. It's true the egg salad is quite delicious but I actually think the Roosevelt sandwich (grilled turkey, cheese, and mustard on a sub bun served with sliced pickles) won me over. A few other items on the menu? Egg sandwiches, grilled cheese, shakes, chips, tuna salad, etc. Given their hours, this is the idea stop for a quick lunch break.

Some of the best, most affordable ice cream in town. Service can be a tad slow depending on how busy it is, but the people are so friendly! They have a variety of flavors and their seasonal ones are very good. They also do sandwiches here, but I think the ice cream is the real star!

Blast from the past setup with a grill top and ice cream across the counter from the regular pharmacy goods. The food is cheap and about on par what you might make at home - nothing fancy but still delicious. No pretense found eating here, come as you are and enjoy the simple bar stool and countertop accommodations for a quick snack.

I can't believe this little gem is less than a mile from my apartment and I never noticed it before. Their home made ice cream is excellent and their peppermint bars are awesome! The peppermint bars consist of a thick slab of peppermint ice cream sandwiched between a layer of oreo type crumbs on the top & fudge on the bottom. Mmmm!

I love Bauders. I went through my Bukowski phase while I was working across the street from Bauders. Every day at lunchtime I would sit at the counter, eat lunch and have a Green River or an Egg Cream while reading myself out of my hometown. Little did I know that years later, from afar, I would dream of Bauder's and miss home. We used to go across the street and get their ice cream on our breaks- it is such good ice cream. When the peaches are in it's heaven. Walk around the pharmacy, eat some of that dish of ice cream and breathe deeply This place is from another era- you can practically smell the old cardboard pillboxes. Add a crisp, warm, late summer/ early fall afternoon and you have the charm of my hometown in a nutshell. I'll be going back when I visit in October. Maybe I will take along a copy of "Ham on Rye", just for old times' sake.

I'd been meaning to stop by Bauder's for years as I'd heard the ice cream was great. I finally made it a month or so ago and was not disappointed. Bauder's has more charm than anyplace I've ever been in Des Moines. It's an adorable little pharmacy, with all the typical pharmacy retail items -- medicines, candy, etc. But the old-fashioned soda fountain type diner is to die for! You can get a simple sandwich, no frills -- think tuna or egg salad -- or just hop up on a stool and order some of their homemade ice cream. Everything's very reasonably priced. Bauder's also offers several of their flavors in pint-size containers so you can enjoy it at home, too. I highly recommend the Peppermint Stick flavor. I adore this place and will be back as often as possible. My only complaint would be their hours -- I wish they were open later on these gorgeous summer evenings.

Yummy Ice cream, and I can walk there from my home. My son loves thier rootbeer floats, and i like the grilled cheeses,. the ice cream is made in the same place they sell it. and the soda fountain is the first one like that i have ever seen.

Adorable little pharmacy and greasy spoon cafe. Their strawberry ice cream is pure bliss on a hot summer day, as are the root beer floats. The staff are the friendliest and sweetest folk around.

I love this little hole in the wall! This unassuming pharmacy sells what you'd expect a pharmacy to sell (prescriptions, cards, over the counter medicine, shampoo, etc). What makes this place so awesome is the lunch counter and old-fashioned sodas. It's a great place to grab a quick, cheap lunch and be transported back in time. The staff is very friendly too!

One of my favorite things about school dsm. They have great ice cream and the staff is so friendly. I wish there were more places on ingersoll like this. I highly recommend the chocolate turtle. OMG. It is SO GOOD.

How disappointing. Went here based on reviews. 8 flavors of ice cream. Thet were out of 2 and didn't know it until we ordered them. Chocolate was full of ice crystals.

I get my prescription there every month. No problems ever. They know me when I walk in. They are always trying to get things done efficiently. I go out of my way to use there services and will continue to do so. Of course the ice cream rocks!!! They have a parking lot on the west side of the building and it is free.

The best French vanilla ice cream I've ever had. It's very weird that it's in a pharmacy but it's so good.

Halleluah.... a family owned pharmacy, somewhere they know you by name! Add to that nationally award winning homemade ice cream and great fountain drinks. I go to Bauders for a good egg salad sandwich and a green river, or maybe a vanilla phosphate. You can also have them deliver your prescription if needed.

I never write reviews. I signed up on Yelp just to write a review on the amazing service that I received from Mark, the pharmacist at Bauder's. I was in desperate search of a medication that was on back order from the manufacturer. Mark went out of his way to find the medication for me and to get it shipped to me in California! He showed me such kindness without even having met me. He is one of the really good guys out there and if I lived in Des Moines, I would not go anywhere else for my medications.

This is a very special place. It's an old-school soda fountain/pharmacy owned by the same family for years. The ice cream is nationally recognized. The food is deli fare, great for a light lunch. Try the fried egg sandwich with a milk shake. This place never disappoints.
